The release of Ubisoft’s upcoming title Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint is less than a month away and we spent the weekend playing through their beta test.
Read on for our beta impressions, a playthrough video, and a slew of new screenshots.
The Ghost Recon franchise dates back to 2001 and has seen ten previous installments in the series. The series follow soldiers from Delta Company, First Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, also known as Ghosts, a fictional elite special operations unit of the United States Army under the Joint Special Operations Command. Ghost Recon Breakpoint picks up 4 years after the last game in the series, Ghost Recon Wildlands, and takes place on a fictional archipelago in the Pacific called Auroa. We will delve deeper into the story once the final release is made available to us, but from what we saw so far, it does seem intriguing and looks very entertaining.
First 40 Minutes
We streamed the first 40 minutes of our gameplay and you can watch that clip, in its unedited form, below.
Massive Open World
The map for the game is huge and Ubisoft says it is larger than the map for GR Wildlands. From what we saw, we can concur that is the case. We spent some time flying around in a chopper just to get the lay of the land and to check out the different types of environments, and the game is impressive. While the game is on an archipelago in the Pacific, it still sports some pretty tall mountains that allow for a snow environment, so they pretty much covered everything possible in the game. You could go from swimming in the ocean to freezing your butt off at a high elevation in a short period of time.
We played the beta on a PS4 Pro and even though the game is still almost a month away from release, it looked incredible and ready to go visually. The environments around us looked lifelike, and the weaponry was just as impressive. Character models gave the beta a lifelike feel, with facial animations that allowed us to read lips most of the time. You could also see different emotions being displayed faces, and that is always a cool effect. The beta wasn’t without its issues and we did run into a few glitches with traversing through some environments, but it was a beta and that is to be expected.
RPG Like Feel
The game has a ranking and upgrade system that felt more like an RPG than it did a third person shooter. That’s not a bad thing, though, as it added a depth that we weren’t really expecting. When you first start out, you’ll have to choose what type of gameplay you prefer and choose a class accordingly. The classes are: Field Medic, Assault, Panther, and Sharpshooter. Each have their own pros and cons and will determine your basic skillset. We will do a deep dive in our full review of the game once we have spent some time with the full release, but from what we played, it is a very deep and robust system that will be easy to use to cater to your own play style. There’s a mix-and-match aspect that will allow for many different combinations, so we are really looking forward to that.
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint release is set for October 4th, 2019 and, with that being less than a month away, the game is already looking very polished and almost ready for prime time.
